If internet scare tactics from companies selling herbal supplements for parasites weren’t enough, the cable TV show “Monsters Inside Me” with its toe-curling film clips has cinched it. We’re in a new “Alien versus Predator” mode, though you might ask which one is us and which them. Those really large parasites you’ll see wriggling across your flat-screen Sony as you scream “I can’t watch this!” (but do) are all helminths, better known as worms. Worldwide, intestinal worm infestation is pretty common, but mainly in underdeveloped countries where people have a bit more contact with raw sewage than we do here in Chicago (unless you swim in the river).
The helminths are the stars of “Monsters Inside Me” because they’re big enough to see without a microscope. When patients ask me to check them for parasites or report “something wriggling in my toilet,” it’s the helminths they have in mind. Obsessing about parasites, despite your best efforts your mind keeps rewinding to John Hurt’s untimely and utterly galvanizing death-by-parasite in the original “Alien.”
Despite studying parasites of all stripes in medical school and testing thousands of patients for them, I think I’ve seen fewer than a dozen cases of intestinal helminth infestation in my entire career. Most of these were in children who’d picked up a pinworm infection (E. vermicularis), little ones being very democratic about their anal hygiene. Pinworm intestinal infection is generally harmless, its main symptom itching around the anus. Treatment using a worm killer, called a vermifuge, wipes out the pinworms after one or two doses.
A second infection is hookworm, once prevalent in the southern US and caused by a combination of inadequate plumbing and a preference for barefootedness. Probably most of the characters in Erskine Caldwell’s novels like God’s Little Acre and Tobacco Road had hookworm. Through a very circuitous route, the worm enters through skin and ends up in the intestines. Once diagnosed it’s easy to treat. I’ve seen exactly one case of hookworm, in a returning Peace Corps worker who should have known better.
Other less common helminths are roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) and the scary looking tapeworm (several species), once common when we were sloppy with our meat, poultry, and fish preparation. Jewish grandmothers and great-grandmothers were frequently victims of fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium), infected by sampling their uncooked haddock while making gefilte fish. These days it’s our sushi/sashimi addiction that renders us susceptible to fish tapeworm. Given the amount of sushi we eat, though, the actual incidence of tapeworm is extremely rare.
What’s living inside me?
It’s these worms (and that TV show) that cause people to lie awake at night wondering what’s living inside them. Well stop wondering and go back to sleep. I want to emphasize that all of these are (a) rare, (b) easy to diagnose, and (c) fairly easy to treat.
You’ll not see the single-celled protozoa infestation stories much on TV. Characters visible only with a microscope just lack the panache, the stage presence, to terrify. However, it’s infections with these little buggers that we’re discussing today.
Doctors are in full agreement that two specific intestinal protozoa–ameba (E. histolytica) and giardia (G. Lamblia)–are troublemakers. Both are acquired by the unappetizing “fecal-oral” route of transmission, which is exactly what it sounds like (now go wash your hands). Most people don’t recall just where they might have acquired amebiasis or giardiasis, but as a general rule you get it from someone who didn’t wash hands after using the toilet. Campers occasionally get giardiasis from drinking water downstream from a herd of cattle. Both infections are manifested by a sudden onset of diarrhea. In the case of giardia, it can be quite explosive and lead to dehydration. Just about anyone who has sudden diarrhea after travelling that doesn’t respond to the routine antibiotics for traveler’s diarrhea (Cipro, Xifaxan, Flagyl) should be tested for these protozoa.
Less agreement among physicians occurs with three other parasites: Endolimax nana, Dientamoeba fragilis, and Blastocystis hominis. For years, these three were considered harmless. Unfortunately, most lab technicians assigned to poop examination (a part-time job I myself held during medical school) are not well-trained in checking for them. It’s very likely a reasonable percentage of patients written off as irritable bowel syndrome/diarrhea dominant actually have an infection with one of these three. The main clues that their IBS is protozoan in origin are that the diarrhea emerges as a new event in their lives, unrelated to stress, and isn’t triggered by any particular foods. “I got traveler’s diarrhea while in Mexico and despite antibiotics, it never went away,” sends me a clear signal to check for parasites.
An easy fix
The combination of lab techs missing these parasites and physician disbelief that the three are troublemakers qualifies parasites for inclusion on our Commonly Missed Diagnosis list. Most of the really good parasite labs–Genova (formerly Great Smokies), Meta Metrix, Doctor’s Data, Meridian Valley–are virtually never used by physicians affiliated with large US medical centers, these doctors preferring to blindly trust their hospital labs. I remember one patient telling me how she handed her Genova parasite test result (showing heavy counts of dientamoeba and blastocystis) to her Northwestern gastroenterologist. He saw the lab and tossed it back without reading it, saying “This is garbage. Never heard of this lab. Bet you got it from a chiropractor.” This, of course, can potentially lead to years of unnecessary diarrhea.
Nutritional guru Alan Gaby, MD, once remarked that if a patient has no access to one of the parasitology labs, she should take her specimen to a veterinarian and palm off her poop as belonging to her beloved pet. Veterinarians are much better than conventional physicians at diagnosing parasites.
Once a diagnosis of any of the three parasites is made, treatment is generally straightforward with an anti-parasite med like Flagyl (metronidazole), an antibiotic like the sulfa drug Bactrim, or a combination of these. After treatment for any parasite, whether it’s a helminth (worm) or a protozoan, a follow-up stool collection is mandatory to ensure it’s been completely eradicated.

Tony, you are so right. I would have never imagined in 2024 people would have to go through this. I have been dealing with it for over a year and cannot get anyone to hear what I am saying. I have become almost a self taught expert on all parasites and parasitic worms that my knowledge has even impressed my most recent dermatologist, who never completed a proper assessment…again…and continued with the psychosis diagnosis given over a year ago. I may fly to China and get a doctor there to complete a proper assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

I am educated with over 30 years as a Certified Firefighter/EMT-Intermediate and 4 years experience as an US Army Combat Lifesaver. I also have an Associates Degree in Health Science along with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Psychology with an Applied Specialization in Sociological Research in Healthcare and a minor in Social Psychology with a Psychological Focus (4 credits from a Double Major finances prevented). Needless to say, I may have had some Combat related Mental Health Disorders that I worked through and have not had any associated symptoms for 5+ years. However, I have worked with the Federal Government since I was 18 years old and have not used any form of drugs in my adult life. That being said, I have went through the same treatment and did contact an attorney when a Emergency Department Physician stood in the threshold, never entered my room, and proceeded to tell me I needed to check myself into a Psychiatric Hospital or “get off the Meth” as he turned and walked away from the doorway. I was insulted, embarrassed, and enraged all at the same time. I can promise as soon as I get a physician to overlook the unprofessional Doctors notes to finally conduct a proper physical assessment and provide a proper diagnosis, Dr. Nobody will be the first to get hit with a malpractice suit followed by the other 5 physicians who used his diagnosis and unprofessionalism as their basis for their duplicate diagnosis.’
The Medical Review Boards and Writers of the DSM-V need to take this parasitic psychosis, drug induced parasichosis, and Morgoellon’s Disease away from these power tripping physicians without any sense of professionalism or bedside manners.

I’m a classic textbook case with moregellons disease. This has been going on for about 10 years now I stopped going to doctors 5 years ago after the humiliation and never ending runaround. I have systemic lupus. When the parasite problem began I developed psoriatic arthritis. Parasites will destroy your immune system, control your hormones causing you to crave sugar and become grouchy grouchy. Parasites are very active during the night making sleep impossible. They mate and reproduce during a full moon and are also very active during a new moon. The comments made about the biofilm are correct as I have heard. Parasites surround themselves with biofilm making it impossible for your immune system to reach and destroy them which is why you need to use herbal remedies and medicines. When the doctors and my family all turned their backs on me calling me a drug addict, delusional etc.. I was left to fend or myself trying all kinds of herbal remedies. When I use d them they were able to kill many parasites but these things multiply exponentially and I can no longer keep up with their rate of reproduction. They are in my hair in my nose in my mouth they have destroyed my teeth they are in my skin and all throughout my body I am sure they’re in every major organ and I feel like I’m just waiting to die. I can no longer tolerate herbal remedies because as soon as I take something the die off immediately makes me so sick that I cannot function for weeks at a time so I feel like there is no hope left for me but I would like to say that those of you who are seeing doctors and getting turned away need to keep records of all your visits and what they did for you which was probably nothing because if they haven’t examined you you have a right to sue and many lawyers will work with you financially if they see your case as solid. I think that if more people took some kind of action against these crazy doctors they may pay attention because money talks and bs walks. If anyone can tell me about something they have used besides black walnut and the traditional herbs that worked for them I would really appreciate finding out anything that you did that helped. I am living in New York right now and it’s so hard to find anyone that isn’t a pompous ass. OHH my G.. I have had the same experience , I am miserable,. sick and loosing mind. Really, I feel delusional , detached, I am Active duty Navy I went to my medical provider for help, and I feel like i,m in a wild conspiracey movie. One doc will endorse and give me assuransce that they will get my the best treatment only to be reffered to another Dr. who tells me nothing is wrong there is no medical issue. The ER , 3 differnt doctors from base, I ENT specialaist , and a UROLOGIST NOT ONE SINGLE SAMPLE TAKEN , NOT ONE SINGLE SCAN OR THOROUGH EXAM, cant even get TRICARE to pay for medication THIS IS DISGUSTING ON ALL LEVELs I am now being ADMINISTRATIVE;LY SEPARATED for missing Dr appointments because My memory has deteriorted I feel tingles in my head , migraines, Mania, depreesion, I dont sleep and my communication and functioning daily is to the point I cant even function . broken speech, meemory loss, loss of motor skill, cognitive thinking , I am not the same as I was three yrs ago

I found a PhD who does precise parasite testing and other lab tests. The website is parasite testing.com. I am going to try to see if they can find anything.
What irritates me is these labs all want u off of any meds, herbals, oils, most vitamins, etc. How do u stop taking parasite meds when u are gaining ground with each round of completed meds?? Like, do they not understand we are holding on by a thred here, lol!!!!
Then he sends the results, quickly to your functional med, or other doc. He is so careful and FINDS 50% MORE parasites than the other top labs. And he’s cheaper. Please god, hope he can give me answers.

No. If u suffer from long term stress, your body acts like an HIV patient. It does not fight stuff off in a normal time frame. Maybe with telemedicine, we can see docs anywhere in the us and find better docs.
The worm drugs are sold OTC in Mexico where they have a clue. I am about ready to buy meds from another country.

We need to document your doc visits where u asked for help and were told no. Then send the confirmation of parasite lab results to the state and national licensing boards as a complaint against that dr. U can easily file claims like this at no cost. They exist to protect our rights. U don’t need a lawyer or to pay fees.

I have been suffering with round worm infection almost a year. Albendazole & Ivermectin didn’t work. I also tested positive for blastocystis Hominis. I’ve lost 25lbs down to only 109. I’ve experienced the same thing from Drs here in southern Oregon. I’ve tried otc parasite treatments with no luck. This has completely detailed my life, I’m so sick and weak experiencing many symptoms mentioned by others. I just can’t take another Dr telling me this doesn’t happen in America or that Albendazole cured it.

I too have been battling this parasitic problem for about 2 years and finally feel like I have found the solution/cure. There is so much information I’d love to share with any and everyone who may be going through this. I reached out to one of the commenters on this post and we have shared battle stories. Long story short, it is a Biofilm problem. For one reason or another our biofilm has been compromised and the final solution for me was attacking the biofilm that the parasites had created – thereby allowing herbs and medicine to quickly wipe out stagnate and well protected colonies.
The parasite is actually roundworm. Do a search on roundworm and there is a lot of information to learned about them. I have done water enemas and a whole host of supplements to eradicate this issue. I feel like I’m slowly dying. I have a brain/muscle parasite. My primary just sent me a letter saying he’s done treating me, my infectious disease doctor says it’s all in my head. Even tho I have a lab report that says I have a round worm infection. What doctor will listen before I die or end up brain damaged or blind? I’m in Florida if anyone has found a good doctor please let me know! My symptoms are balance, confusion, muscle tremors back spasms and movement through out my body. Please please help

Julie, you will be OK. Round worms can be eradicated. I know yo feel like crap but trust me, I have had parasites for at least 4 years. They don’t generally kill us, but you are right. This was posted long ago so hopefully you guys have found relief. Everyone should do Candida, metal, chemical, liver/kidney, parasite and colon detoxes. Very critical for our health. And I have followed the blood type diet. My IBD is gone. I use to have chronic BV infections and eliminating all sugar, wheat and drinking chicory root has made that non existing. I can attest that parasitology in this country is not where it should be. I have suffered from a parasite compromising my health since I traveled out of country to Cancun with my sister. I don’t know if it is one or if there are many, sometimes it feels like one and at other times, it feels like many parasites in my upper esophagus. The doctors, which have been many, can most assuredly see the internal damage where I have informed them the parasites move around. I have an atypical parasite as my parasite sometimes stays in further down in my stomach for a few days (if I’m extremely lucky) or hours and then begins an incessant migration up my esophagus and attaches itself to the where the nasal passages meet the throat. Very rarely, it well attach itself to where the ear canal connects to the throat. The doctors have been able to give no definitive answer despite all the visual evidence of the internal damage that it has inflicted. I had a bronchoscopy that showed nothing unusual. However, they completed a upper gi endoscopy on me and discovered internally that there were tons of cuts throughout my esophagus down to my upper stomach. They will not say its attributed to the parasite, yet, they cannot figure out why I dramatically keep losing blood and nutrients are completely depleted after a few months. It is not cancer, thank God, or any other “easily identifiable malady. ” So, they’ve literally given me no answers. In the beginning, I was hospitalized because the movement was so bad, I couldn’t eat or drink because of them. When the parasites moved the most, I was unable to eat for a short while. I had intermittent diarrhea and constipation. I tried so many things homeopathic remedies and diets, I shrunk down to half the size I once was. I would go back and forth between traditional doctors and naturopaths, no one could help me. I have reached a point where I am starting to believe this may never come to an end. I have been hospitalized 3 times, near death, because of this. I have reached out to anyone and everyone I could to no avail. I understand that there are people who may be delusional. But, then, there are others who are suffering through a neverending hellish nightmare that is inconceivable!!! And, worst yet, they’re looked at with contempt and incredulity because they bring health riddles that are perplexing and not easily solved with cookie cutter, outdated, treatments. What is truly inconceivable is when people are so adamant that they know everything when quite clearly, they’re lacking. I was told by one of my hospital’s parasitologists that parasites do not crawl up the throat, they simply don’t do that. However, as insomnia is a major symptom of parasitism, I began doing my own research into the topic of parasitic behaviour as I now have tons of hours to waste. After reviewing several peer review reports and scholarly journals, I discovered findings that there are a multitude of trematodes or flukes, helminths, and various other parasites that end up predating humans presenting with no esinophilia or no elevations in white cell counts. I was very glad to learn that there were others experiencing similar symptoms. The symptoms are intermittent diarrhea and constipation, the constant & neverending pain from it digging in my body including my esophagus, rear nasal passages, inner ears, left shoulder blade, and stomach, insomnia, hives/rashes, fevers, lumps in neck and/or lymph nodes, etc.I
have noticed different behavior from the parasites depending on the shifts in my diet, such as, low sugar diets cause massive amounts of movement whereas high sugar diets cause infrequent movements. I explained that this thing moves around a lot, it almost never sits still, digging and rooting around my entire upper digestive system so by the time a treatment or medicine is to come, it has moved. I have not given up but it has definitely made it so much harder to fight through these things. I don’t expect any realistic help but I wanted my story out there for others to know that they’re not alone!!! I pray every day for a reprieve. This is something that will try your faith to the max and I have not forsaken Yahweh. So, don’t lose hope. God bless you all.

My cat came in one day, and I was petting him, and when I did, he was close to my face, and then all of a sudden my nose started itching really bad, I went to the bathroom and blew my nose and these little clear tiny contact looking things with a black ring on them came out, I opened up my mouth and they were there too.I looked them up and they looked just like round worm parasites. I have several coons in my yard, and they carry them. I went to see a specialist that specializes in parasites a few weeks later, and she said it was all on my head, and there is no way that paricites will jump from animal to human, I said they didn’t jump, they flew off his coat when I was playing with his coat, he was right up on my face. Well needless to say she basically said that can’t happen, and walked out. A few weeks latter I started having problems with my nose bleeding, and felt like something was moving around in my gut. I kept blowing out of my nose blood and these long looking worm things, I know it sounds crazy but I showed one to my family and friends, they all said it looked like worms. Anyways instead of going to see another crack, I went to a Herbal Store and told her my problem, she gave me medicine pills and a special tea, I did that in a few days I found them in my bowel. My nose finally cleared up, and was parasite free. I DON’T KNOW WHY DOCTORS THINK THEY KNOW EVERYTHING, because they don’t!

wow, thank you for all of your stories. I started having problems July 4 2018-saw things sticking out of stool. I have done herbal 14 day cleanses (3-the max per year), salt water flushes, enemas (now I try 2/wk), tinctures, papaya seeds, garlic etc. I have had 3 neg stool tests (1 independent), my MD won’t see me anymore, GI doc thinks I’m nuts, naturopath didn’t help, coil therapy on abdomen. On first round of herbal cleanse a small tumor on my middle finger disappeared. My eyesight is getting worse daily, I am sore-right shoulder pain…basically sore and fatigued, hard to sleep, and fuzzy thoughts, anxiety. On weeks that I juice more I feel better and less pain. I see all types of worms and eggs in stools-and stool shapes are triangular and cut off at an end like an artery. There are brown worms with seams, tan string like worms, worms off of worms, worms with proboscis. Nothing in the parasite model photos on line! (and btw–I brought first specimen in and P.A. was freaked out but the doctor and lab shut her down & they wouldn’t take sample). Stomach gurgles. Itchy at night all over. Had an itchy rash for 2 weeks. Flagyl for tooth infection pulled out many worms and stopped rash. Some times after enema (bag not fleets) I don’t go again for days and then little pellets only. Haven’t had a long real bowel movement since June 2018. They are eating everything is what I’m thinking. Doctors need to realize that this IS a real issue in our world. Went to Cuba 2 years ago but extensive down south u.s.a travels last spring is where I think it started…wild caught fish, sushi etc. I am more holistic but at this point want pharma but no one will prescribe. I have 2 friends local with parasites but everyone else thinks we’re crazy

I just would like to tell you all Thank you for telling your stories and validateing that I’m not alone and crazy. For 6 months now I have seen 3 different er doctors at 3 different hospitals 2 urgent care doctors at 2 different urgent cares 1 infectious disease specialist and my family doctor numerous times as well as a dermatologist .With these following tests performed the o/parasite test done 7 times with MRI bloodwork done 4 times and a skin lesion peeformed All Tests Came Back NEGATIVE..My symtoms started about 6 months ago when I had a friend bring her new puppy over shortly after my house became infested with flea’s then about 10 days later was feeling sick (Flu type sick) I felt something also go into my eye as I slept. Ive had my left eye just watet for 3days my eyesight has declined as well as my body I hurt badly every single day I have seen several types of different worms in my stool I have skin lesions on my hands, wrists, ankles that you can clearly see the parasites coming thru my skin that then makes it incredibly itchy then leaves skin lesions from me scratching. I have collected and taken pictures to these drs for them to just go by and wholeheartedly believe what the lab says.. My whole life has changed and I have become very depressed by these parasites My memory is gone and with all of this I have lost 37 pounds in 6 months and Trust Me *I’m not trying too loose any weight. I also live in a very small town in MI and I’m gonna die from this if I don’t get some type of help I feel so helpless to say the least. I have been unwell this year: In hind sight I believe I had pinworm infection in March of this year, which came and went through April.. on another note, I also have had weird pain sensations in my legs from my groin to my toes, varying from nerve pain to tendon pain and muscle pain and it migrated everyday somewhere else in the leg! I tested IGM positive for Lyme on 2 bands via my foot dr so my pcp treated with 3 weeks of doxy, to no avail because once I was off the medicine my symptoms increased ten fold and I’ve been dealing with them all summer while seeing Lyme literate dr while on doxy again… cd57 value crashed and has now recovered and I am coming off doxy, but my leg/foot etc pains still remain… I am doing a parasite cleanse right now, pin worms are active, but I still don’t know the reason for the pains? Neuro dr found nothing! Could it be parasites? Remaining symptoms are nightly raised body temp 99.5, migrating leg/foot/toe etc pain, with pins needle feeling in feet and hands- mostly left side but sometimes both, hands tingle and fall asleep in the night while sleeping, bottoms of feet hurt when going from sitting to standing for long periods, minor skin itching/sensations on face/body that comes and goes…. Could it all be from just be remaining pinworms? Any ideas what would cause the remaining symptoms? Any ideas or suggestions would greatly be appreciated! To the best of my knowledge B Hominis symptoms are limited to the digestive tract (nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, etc). Hashimoto’s on the other hand can cause all sorts of mischief including musculoskeletal issues.

I have been unwell for a few mths with nausea diahhrea fatigue and other symptoms. The result of stool test was presence of parasites (blasto and). I have hashimotos so fatigue is nothing new but it is the other symptoms that puzzle me including muscle pain/discomfort notably in my chest. There is also a pain at the bottom of my shoulder blade, similar to that described by Sam in Oct 2015 post. I also have dry upper throat and nasal passage with dry cough and headaches. The muscle pains are persistent but the nausea and diahhrea come in cycles. Can these parasites cause the pain/discomfort i (and Sam) refer to in my chest and back (pain below shoulder blade as described by Sam) and also the dryness and cough?

I’ve taken some of the best OTC Parasite killers and cleansers on Amazon. The list is, Black Walnut Hull, Wormwood, 14 day colon cleanse detox, and “Intestinal Pro.” For about 4 months I’ve noticed my stool becoming mushier and mushier. I had a feeling it might be parasites, until it seemed like I was having complete mal-absorption. I took all of those products I talked about at once and somewhat aggressively, along with some garlic cloves and pumpkin seeds. I passed from taking the high doses of cayenne pepper even though I eat that and hotsauce nearly every day. Long story short, I pooped out some clear squigglies and then I was sure there were parasites. Then the second elimination I did, there was one that looked like it might’ve been 4 inches long. It just didn’t look like mucoid plaque to me. When i drizzled it under water, it completely split open but didn’t look like it had any insides. This second time, I also had some little things that looked like granules. But from the looks of it, they were “flukes.” Around the time I developed mushy stool, I know the environment I was around probably was the culprit of these nasty things. Doing this all at once had me thinking I had severe colon problems that led me to schedule an appointment with a specialist. I felt sick in the most weird way. Like my body was weakened a little, and my stomach had a head cold. I had dirreah and pain in my stomach for several days on and off. After 3-4 days of being off, I havent had any symptoms of IBS (I didn’t mention that) and the first few inches of my stool have been firmer than when my problems developed 4 months ago which I consider excellent news. Right now I’m taking Tumeric and Astaxanthin. Those products I took all at once made me feel sick maybe because I killed to many things at once. I don’t know. Hi Janet. There’s a doctor Omar Amin at parasitology center in Arizona who specializes in morgellons detection and treatment. It sounds like that’s what you have. You don’t need to travel you just send a stool sample. I’ve heard that this is a hard one to get diagnosed and treatment for. I hope he can help you out. I’m sorry about your condition and the doctors overlooking it. It’s a shame they do that but I guess if they don’t know what something is they don’t know how to treat it. Good luck with things.

You may have a condition called Morgellons Disease. For many victims, it is triggered by Lyme Disease so your first step is to get tested for Lyme. Ask your doctor for the Western Blot test. If positive, treating Lyme will help.
If negative, you might benefit having a doctor order the medications in Klinghardt Parasite Protocol which you can find online. It works best when used with a medication called Pimozide which reduces symptoms as the parasites die off

A year ago I became infected with TINY white worms thru facial sores (from non-malignant skin cancer). They have traveled everywhere: in nose, in ears, armpits, any (unfortunate) skin/fat folds, scalp, neck, tongue (eew!), and vagina and anus! I’ve had over 100 medical appointments, including urgent care and ERs. Lab tests come back as ‘unknown debris’. Well of course it’s unknown! Or why send to a lab? They are so thin–a small snip of a hair from a person with fine hair. If you try and grab them (when they’re sticking out, such as when I sweat) with tweezers, they usually pull back in before you get even a little nubbin. The only place I’ve been able to get whole ones are from the vagina, where they are often fully out, but they are so fragile I only been able to get two that are intact. The Dermo says they are just fibers, from toilet paper! But I have phone videos where you see them coming out of the skin! And they have a definite shape, unlike ‘pieces of toilet paper’! And toilet paper doesn’t magically extrude from ones’ skin! I even had one sticking out of an eyebrow when I was actually at an urgent care, and the doc said “YES! I see it!” But no one will commit these unknown ‘sightings’. At my local ER, I showed them the vagia video, the doc went off to confer with her superior, and came back with ‘we have never seen anything like this, and have absolutely no idea how to treat it!’ Then they referred me to an infectious diseases doc, where I had already tried to get into, and was told at that time, ‘no appointment without a referral’. So I get the referral from the ER, and was told, ‘no appointment without a diagnosis’! If anyone knew what it was, I wouldn’t have needed an ID doc. And the ER report said ‘Skin problem’!!!! No one will admit, in writing, the are clueless. I finally found a doctor; an old guy, old school, with a complete well rounded education, and who wasn’t trying to get out of the office in 30 seconds and to the next pa$ien$. Leslie Brandwin. Great guy who obviously was disturbed that he couldn’t help me–apologized three times! He wanted me to go to Hopkins, to a real parasitologist, which wasn’t an option for me, so wrote me a referral for a local doc that he said was the only person in the area (D.C.), who may be able to help me. Which is what I’m going to do. I just don’t understand why, when faced with an unknown, the doc thinks I’m crazy? Why can’t they understand that I just can’t parade my worms out right then and there, and why deny what they can see with their own eyes, albeit a video. How on earth could I possibly fake something like that–coming out of my skin?! I don’t present as a kook, I’ve been told on several occasions, but very aware and intelligent. So why the evasiveness, or downright disbelief? It just boggles my brain. Does anyone out there know anything about this worm? I’m truly frightened: I caught one wiggling across my eyeball, and if they’re in all these places, why not making pathways in my brain?

I too have the white things plus all the other stuff everyone on here has posted. An entomologist from our university says these are phorid flies, ie (drain flies), (coffin flies). However, he says they wouldn’t infest me like I describe. Then other universities say that they can and do. Just wanted to share that info.

Omg I feel your pain. I literally have dealt with fleas every year- this year it was worse. I had fleas, mites, possibly scabies, a carpet beetle larvae infestation (I swear these things are tiny and do live on our skin and eat our hair follicles) and now I have hookworms – and been to 13+ doctors in last 4 months they think I’m crazy but the sores on my arms ankles neck and the larva migrans tell the story. Yet I’m still technically undiagnosed. I am scheduled for stool samples this week – finally after 3 months of hell losing my job over it and about to lose my home now too all because of being so sick without a diagnosis. I have all the symptoms of the worms and the dermatologist and infectious disease dr didn’t recognize the worms in my skin – it’s pretty obvious. Plus I have told them I’m pulling worms out of my scabs, and I’ve seen them crawling under my skin. Sigh. Healthcare is a joke I swear I would’ve had better luck with a vet. Most times it hurts really bad, but they move in my forehead & itch terribly until they stop. They create sores on my skin, and the scabs are actually eggs & some of the scabs are outline of the worms, idk? I can see the body structure perfectly in these scabs. Sometimes they come out of my skin, just lil white things. The mucus out of my nose is also eggs and written larvae? I’m not sure. My name is Denise and I too have suffered for many years with the same long list of symptoms, and for years have been told I’m in good health. For the past 5 years I didn’t have health ins. So I have neglected my body until now. I have found a great Dr.who from day 1 has ordered the test coinciding with each symptom so far i have OA in my shoulders,hips and hands and recently had a ct scan to determine if the cyst found in my wrist is cancer or not. And I have high blood pressure high cloresteral? Calcium and vitiam D deficit and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Now this. For the past two days I have felt nausea, bloating,belching and stomach pains, I thought it was from my meds, but I just had the most frightful thing happen. After having a bm I noticed odd chunks in the toilet and after a closer look and pulling out what looked like flesh I realize I have parts of some kind of worms and large ones at that. I am freaked out to see things that have eyes living inside me but I have no idea if I should be freaked out or from what I’ve read just relax it is a common thing.

I had a colonoscopy done recently at San Francisco General Hospital, and I clearly saw on the monitor the doctor detach and suck out a worm (leaving a perfectly round red ring on the wall of my cecum where it was attached), a dozen eggs clustered next to it, and a few tube worm segments from my cecum. Nobody in the room said anything and nothing was mentioned on the report. Doctors will actively hide the fact that you have a parasitic infection, and if you ask about it they will laugh at you. Why is that?

I have been suffering since 2003, I am a nurse and my career was going just fine. I had to retire early. I had some itching and the most unusual symptoms of small, invisible flies, will come out my skin. others around you are affected in that they seem to play around your. ear and face and your legs. I captured some in my home at one time and the university identified them as fungus gnats. The problem has only intensified over the years and I have no social life. I put antibiotic ointment and prednisone cream, with minimum affect. After a couple of hours they are swarming again. Infectious Dr. didn’t believe me. Is it possible they are reproducing in my body. and causing me ear pain and muscle pain. I have had only one week of relief in 15 years, when a dr. ordered a shot of prednisone and rocephin, and gave me 10 days of avelox for a sinus infection.. Since then no relief, but I think it wasn’t a permanent and appropriate treatment long term I need help, any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello Dr Edelburg, does your office offer treatment for BH? I have a stool report from a few years ago showing I have BH but my internist told me its non pathogenic. I’ve had some odd symptoms for the past year. Before I left for China I had this ache in my lower abdomen and my doctor said it was stress related. When I came back to the US I still had this lower pain and dark green stools. I currently have shifting discomfort throughout my mid and lower abdomen with gas all day, everyday. I had morgellons. I think it is related to Bartonella. It caused a lot of depression, anxiety, brain fog, etc. It also caused physical symptoms. If you cannot find the source of the parasites see a Lyme specialist. Ask the Lyme association in your to make a recomendation. I have been on 6 months of antibiotics and parasitic drugs and I am just now feeling better. I had the worst Herx reactions but kept on and the meds finally worked. If biaxin makes you fatigued it could be because of a bacteria or parasite dying and leaving toxins.

I live in the Pacific Northwest I am 40 yr old and in the last 6 yrs my quality of life has gone down. My muscles ache and always sore. Balance I do not have. Clumsy I have always been but holy moly there comes a time when that is not even describing it anymore. I trip over everything! My symptoms have me all over the board to the point that when I go see Doctors now I scare them and I get the deer in the head light look. Or I have to tell them what some stuff is. The Lab tests do not test for all worms. The labs will send a negative back if the parasite comes up as unknown. The 1000 types there are for humans to get are not all tested for. If the lab does not test for a particular worm than they can not ID it, so they call it food or feces even if it is worms. I just found that out after spending hundreds of dollars at 3 labs. Ropeworms are different and dont show up. They are different class but doctors are divided if they are real. They are but they are hard to detect and are usually mistaken for body mucas. Good luck getting a doctors help. They think you are crazy because the tests are negative and they refuse to help me. I have been to 6. I see worms every day in stool but Doctors don’t look at stool.I have begged for help and get none, they will kill you so dont give up. Curezone has some help.I am still fighting but I need a prescription and docs wont give one so I take horse wormer.

Your symptoms are very similar to a condition called Morgellons and recent research attributes this to Lyme Disease. Find a “Lyme Literate Physician” and get tested. The best test for Lyme is from a lab called IgeneX

thank you for pointing out that blasto is a problem. so many doctors disagree. I’ve been sick for 4 years with this. Finally they did a poop sample and it came positive for blasto in high numbers. unfortunately non of the antibiotics have killed this. Metronitazol was the worst for side effects. Also tried septra and Nitrazoxinade. There are many people just like me who are left in pain unable to kill this parasite. I hope more research is made into finding drugs that work. The Blastocystis foundation recognizes that once this parasite creates a biofilm the antibiotics struggle to penetrate the parasite.

Hi. I am very familiar with some of the symptoms posted. I have known I have worms in my stools since about 1 year ago. They are now visible through my skin and they are in my blood vessels. I have been treated like a kook and not believed by ER doc and my pcp did believe (hard to deny a sore on my knee with worm visible surrounding it but stool test came back negative so now I am a kook with him. Try taking food grade diatomaceous earth in water every morning. It does not discriminate; it will grind up any insect. Also, try some Bentonite Clay to pull pathogen from intestinal wall. You can put one or two drops of Clive oil or tea tree oil in either mixture. Do this on empty stomach in the morning. You and they steal peoples money by encouraging we pay for a kit that only tests for a few of the 100 type worms people get. Not only that, it cost more for a different kit they tell you to buy when the first one is negative. Thank you. I used this lab and paid a few hundred. They missed my parasites. Research has told me it took 8 seperate tests for one gal to get diagnosed. I can’t afford to keep getting these tests. I know what I see and would gladly send you pictures and pay you to try. I live in a small townand I am desperate, I can’t tell you how much I need your help. REB if you are still with us. I know of someone who can help you. I had the same problem. Those with this problem need to be treated by a traditional doctor of chinese medicine. Western medicine does not have adequate testing or medicines to eradicate parasites. It is not a quick fix. It takes time, a special blend of herbs that are changed regularly and acupuncture to get rid of the parasites. I wish you luck and anybody else who is dealing with the issue.

Well if you meant still with u as in alive with active worms yes.I believe I have ropeworm, which is not recognized in the USA. There is no known way to eradicate them., not with any controled study that has proof backed by science. The fact I spent hundreds makes me so angry. I’m already ssick and can barely get through the daays as the worms make me weak. As for Dr E, its odd he or she won’t give their full name. Why is that? I feel crawling inside my neck. It has been going on for a couple years and everyone thinks it can’t be real. I have yet to go to the Dr because I know they will say its in my head. I have all the symptoms Sam states plus I cough up mucous when I cough and have to spit it up constantly and this round of symptoms I have severe left side deep in my chest pains it hits hard subsides then returns. This has been going on for 2 days this round. It started over a year ago. I seek medical help and get told it’s in my head they can’t find anything I’m paranoid or it’s a drug addiction problem.I have a girlfriend who has the same or worse symptoms she gets told the same thing by completely different doctors. I am scared and feel all alone in this nightmare. Same experiences with doctors and family and friends. I have an appointment with a parasitologist at Emory Clinic of Travel Wellness November 12th, 2019. Their doctors informed me that general doctors and board certified specialist do not have the proper equipment or lab testing needed to diagnos a parasitic disease or “tropical disease”. Doctors in the USA do not realize or refuse to acknowledge that due to easier access to international travel, not to mention changes in climate (in 2018 GA had tropical like weather from March to October. Hot and an unusual excess of rain) that tropical diseases are no longer isolated to travel outside the US. Thankfully the CDC has established the NID unit. A field of study to educate 300 (small number) doctors to specialize in NEGLECTED INFECTIOUS DISEASES. Diseases thought to be found only in third world countries. But this program had just begun. How in the hell none of the 5 doctors I visited had no knowledge of this information but myself with only a two year college degree was able to find out about the NID division of the CDC truly scares the hell out of me. It has taken me 3 years to find a parasitologist and the Emory Clinic of Travel Wellness. They were very empathetic and with no hesitation told me to get a copy of my medical records from my existing physician and be at their office November 12th. I will be back here to share any info I receive after my appointment. In the meantime just get alot of rest, eat healthy, stop trying all the herbal or any other options available on the internet, and most importantly if after rest and minimal activity, you start to feel better, DO NOT RESUME EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES BECAUSE YOU THINK ITS OVER. Try to find a facility that specializes in tropical diseases. It does not matter if you have not traveled outside the US. THAT IS ALMOST MEDEVIAL MEDICAL THINKING.

I often find myself wondering if sharing all the info is more confusing or beneficial at dr apt. I’ve had it go both ways. Its especially concerning when visiting a specialist. I found a GP doctor that understand he doesn’t always have the answer but that doesn’t mean syptoms don’t exist. We keep trying new things. Thanks for reminding me to get back on d ribose/ Corvalen. I have been going through a terrible ordeal. After years of research and recently a severe cold with a cough that has lingered for months I have concluded I may have an infestation. When I reflect back over the years I really cannot pin point when or how whatever is going on may have started. I am starting to believe I have had it for years and due to the natural aging process I am now experiencing more symptoms than ever. I am having a terrible time trying to convince my family care physician that something is terribly wrong despite a laundry list of symptoms. I do not understand the dismissive demeanor of the physicians over the years. We have all seen or read about illnesses that may occur out of the norm. I find it extremely ironic for professions that studied science as a major and refuse to acknowledge mutations occur and with the ever changing microbial word anything can happen to anyone.
Here is a list of my symptoms as of today:
Cough with an odor from my throat or lungs
Four staph infections in the last two years
Sore muscles, lungs..sometimes muscle fatigue to the point I can not stand or walk
Lethargy, insomnia, constipation, severe bloating, gas, diarrhea
Acne
Vaginal odor that started a few years ago. Boric Acid inserts eliminate this problem but must be used weekly.
The odor will return or become more prominent after my cycle or intercourse.
Watering and irritation of my left eye, eyesight has deteriorated rapidly over the past 4 years
Athletes foot on both feet and my right hand

I find this list ridiculous to say the least. I feel like a crazy person with hypochondria. After all the research I realize these symptoms are listed in tons of diagnosis. Because of this coupled with a lack of physicians in my area to help rule out anything I have been coping with a dark, gloomy, hopeless quality of life.
I find myself analysing doctor visits I have experienced in recent years. I am left with burning questions and self blame.
Sorry for the lengthy post, I do feel a little better now that I have made a list and shared it with someone. I would never take this entire list to a doctor for fear of judgement and invalidation.

Now they are starting to suffer as I have, but not as often or to the degree of illness I have. Let me point out that I am the “head of the household” in charge of cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation until 2 weeks ago. I quit. Maybe a black fly that infects people with a worm parasite causing an infection known as onchoceriasis or in common terms “river blindness disease”. This was believed to only exist in Africa, Latin America, etc. When I first ran across this possible parasitic infection on the World Health Organization website and the CDC website it was still listed as a parasite not likely found in the United States. Upon further reading this fly and parasite have been a problem in the USA for some time.

Actually, veterinarians miss macroparasites a fair amount of times, and not for lack of looking but rather limitation of the test used.
One typical way to detect macroparasites in pets (such as roundworms, the subject of this story) is to look for ova (eggs) in the pet’s stool sample. But these don’t always turn up, even with multiple samples. Several years ago, when my dog suffered from intermittent diarrhea over several months, I didn’t get an accurate diagnosis from the vet until I found a very much alive and kicking 4-inch roundworm in the dog’s stool, which I bagged and later handed to my vet. “Sterile females or males only” was my vet’s mumbled explanation why the worms weren’t detected previously despite several specimens having been brought in; he added that this “occasionally happens”. Happy ending: once diagnosed, medication quickly solved that problem and the dog was back to normal.
Wonder if this same test limitation doesn’t occur in people, as well, even when a well-informed physician wil take the time to order tests to look for parasites as done by a reputable lab?

I ‘ve heard about a new technology using vibrational frequenters that are supposed to help disrupt the parasites, so the body can attack them more easily. Apparently you can connect with an operator of one of the scans, get a remote unit, and do it online with them. You might check out videos of an AO scan. Hope it helps.

I’m in a doctoral program right now in psychology where we deal with diagnoses as well and they’re treating me like I’m 1- not knowledgeable about the diagnosis process and jumping the gun to conclusions and 2- psychotic (ironically, enough that’s in my field, not yours so if I can’t bring up a conclusion from your field, then you should stick to your specialty as well). When all else fails go to Johns Hopkins ER or University of NC ER. Praziquantel or Albendazole is the preferred meds for most of the species. The proper dosage and times must be followed. Unfortunately the doc I had didn’t give me the proper dosage or times so it didn’t work. I figured it out through research. Don’t stop finding doctors. Someone will eventual listen. I’ve seen probably 50 docs this year with more than 22 scans and they couldn’t figure out my issue. Even when I discovered what my issue was the doc said it didn’t happen in the us. Maybe a third world country but not here. Well I am proof it does happen here. Our meats are NOT from the US. The meats imported, if processed in the US, will have a “product of USA” on it. It’s misleading and our congress enacted this in 2015. It’s called COOL. Country of origin label. This bill was reversed which used to require the origin of meat. Now it don’t. Yes please get this policy changed. It is unethical to not disclose where our food comes from. whether it’s processed in China etc. I do know they send large tankers full of live cows pigs and chickens to be processed & packaged in China and then actually shipped back here to be sold. None of these doctors will even consider testing for parasites. So how then can we get prescriptions for these meds? Im considering hoing to tractor supply to buy some ivermectin for horses. Finally, I found an awesome dermatologist. To get a culture of my scalp. Which is where I was having the problem. And it came back. To be staff It could have gotten worse and turned into MRSA. Which is life threatening. Try to find. A Christian dermatologist I went to several. And found a nice dermatologist in Austin, Texas and its Evans Dermatology they were so nice and inexpensive that is why they started their practice. So people like me to go to the dermatologist.

I have my shit together and I’ve been to 5 different huge hospitals and they blew me off, one told be to eat more fiber, one told me to lay off the meth, ( never done that In my life) and the other seemed to really hear me he looked at the pics and said wow this is disturbing, then left the room and never saw him again, different doc came in and said labs were good and to have less stress in life! Hi Lauren my name is Heather and my husband’s name is Mike. I’ve been reading thru all the comments and it’s like we are all living somewhat of ye same lives. I have been desperately googling information for so long and have been to the ER twice and we were both basically ushered out the doors with laughter and whispering behind us. One Dr told my husband he had cellulitis, well, I have had cellulitis a little over a year ago on the right side of my belly, it was the size of a softball within a couple days and horribly painful which I endured with absolutely nothing for pain or any antibiotics because I told the ER Dr that I was allergic I sulpha drugs and he prescribed BACTRIM to me anyway after dismissing my claim of the allergy which include vomiting, high fever and turning red all over, so I KNOW it wasn’t cellulitis. I believe we have liver flukes, idk how except we are some undercooked fresh water fish at a friend house about 2 months before symptoms started tearing their ugly heads. My husband and I were living in a motel in Columbia, SC where we are from and it wasn’t the cleanest of places so my mind started wandering about every single thing. I’m sorry if I’m going on but I have to get this out because I’ve even went as far as going to a psychic because I thought someone put Roots(a curse) on us. I have OCD so before I get in the bed I will sweep the entire room carpet, not even a piece of fuzz is left. So every morning I would get up I would find these little “stones” that look like teeny lizard heads, sounds crazy but I have a collection of the little guys. It didn’t dawn on me at first and it wasn’t making sense to what I was finding. I do have to admit that we are recovering meth users so I thought maybe I was delusional because at the time, my husband thought it was in my head and he reason for that is one night I felt something in my eyes almost like it crawled or slithered or whatever they do up to the corner of my eye and then went in. Being high on meth and thinking that could make someone panic real quick but I like to be able to prove my mind wrong so I went to the mirror, just FYI I have never ever picked my face or eyes or anything when I was getting high so this was out of the ordinary for me. I saw them, I felt them and they either bite when threatened or dig their spiny covers bodies in not sure but I know it hurts really really bad. Those wasnt my imagination, this was real. I started googling parasites for some reason and the one that was identical to what I have found in that room and what we’ve seen outlines in our skin is the liver fluke. Along with the little heads I started noticing small pieces of “plastic” like when you tear open a disposable spoon or fork, just a little slither. I examine everything and when I started looking at these pieces of “plastic” they look very familiar. I found 2 heads one day and a small piece of the clear plastic looking material, I out it together and they all fit perfectly, this was my first whole one I found and I was relieved, it wasn’t in my head, it wasn’t the drugs it was a liver fluke. My husband started having symptoms too and he then believed me. These creatures when being threatened in any way have “soldiers” that come to their aid by “spitting” these little strands that resemble thread but feel waxy and make it impossible to get to the parasite. I tried to stop one from going into my ee one night so I held it with my finger pretty tight and it fought by “biting” my eye and that was the real first horrific pain I had inflicted on my body by this tiny little creature setting up house like it was on vacation in the Hamptons and I was an intruder. Their bodies, as you probably know, are covered in spine-like anchors or movers. When you try to evict them their “mob thugs” jump into action and you can actually see the outlines of them arriving at the scene like they are arriving at a rumble. It was like “Westside Story” starring The Liver Fluke Mob and their Henchmen. I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m making light of these situations but since May 2020 we have been suffering and I had finally decided that this was something we were going to have to live with like it or not. It’s not only the Fluke Mob we deal with I also have been losing my hair because one of their relatives are in my scalp, just not exactly sure which ones. They mimic everything they are on and they live between our skin and the fat and tendons I think, can’t recall at the moment. They are in any kind of hair on our body and they knot the hair up, it’s really strange. My husband has them in his head and I can see the outline of them. I read that they affect men 600x worse than women, I think that number if correct but it gives them terrible memory loss, anger and a few other things. I have seen what appears to be worm castings in my stool, I even took a picture to show the Dr but he had already dismissed me so he didn’t have time for me to find the picture. He was in the room with me all of 10 minutes and sent me home with paperwork say undefined illness. He said the only cases are in Asia, never in the US, he looked younger than Doogie Howser. I KNOW he felt my glare from his patronism. That’s the day my husband was diagnosed with cellulitis because his cheek was swollen from trying to dig this escape artist out. manner. We went a second time to a different hospital and I’m always very honest when it come to my drug use so now I had Doogie 2nd raising one eyebrow at me and dismissing my claims. I felt humiliated so I haven’t been back to any Drs or ERs but my husband went one more time and his paperwork actually had “stop smoking meth” as one of his at home instructions. I was livid, what Dr says that like that?? Symptoms come and go, they are back right now in my eyes, they have bored holes in the corners of my eyes and I feel that tickle when clock in and clock out. They are in my nose which really painful, I have stabbing , debilitating pains in my hips at times, they are visible in my legs and feet, and btw I have a very serious blood clot problem caused by a faulty IVC FILTER and this really concerns me. I am going to be a new Grandmother in June 2021 and I am desparate for my husband and I to be rid of our “tenants”. This is the first sigh of relief I’ve had since May 2020. I’m sorry if I have offended anyone with humoring my story but I have to, I feel like I’m going to completely wig out one day. I have so much more to say but I think this is enough for now ????. I saw him personally and his wife. they are straight forward, respectful and don’t waste time. 5 years ago they didn’t accept insurance, however, their fees and medication fees were within reach and reasonable.im pretty sure the medical board has approved it is a real disease.(it took over 40 years!) although not all medical doctors except it.(they’re delusional!lol) there are clinics now and more doctors so possibly insurance may cover it. So here wee sit some 12 years after the fact of an apparent medical challenge no one seems to take seriously. People literally losing all they have worked for and certainly any and all quality of life. A REAL disease of some type is apparent. Every doctor I have seen, with the exception of one is in denial. Seems they are paid the same to see you as they would if they actually treated your condition. Medical records seem to work against all infected. Treatment of discrimination appear to follow in your search for competence. The description of delousional parasitosis more damaging than the disease itself. Presentation of useful evidence, discarded as unrealistic. Suffering people by the thousands, maybe 10’s of thousands by now. Just what is the move to get authoritative figures to recognize there is a REAL UNADRESSED MEDICAL PROBLEM IN THE U.S. that needs proper attention. Do we all deserve to suffer and simply die? Are we not worthy of medical help? I would sure prefer to be told the TRUTH and to know, than to die never knowing. Since the parasitic condition is initially denied by medical experts, any and all side effects and health conditions following, are discounted too. How can this disease rest as a simple DELOUSION when thousands are suffering? How long can the current protocall for treatment remain to take a few HAPPY PILLS and it will all somehow just go away? I would not wish this medical condition on anyone in the world. It’s plain torture. I pray daily that one set of athoritive eyes sees, hears, and believes what’s going on is real, and takes the necessary steps and measures to give back the meaning of life that has been taken from so many of us. I cannot think of another area of medicine, more in need of compassion and action than what so many people are actually going thru with this horrible disease.
