Glance at the front page of any major website or newspaper–New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune–and you’ll see there’s just one topic of actual importance to your health and longevity.
Now take a few focused breaths and return to calm. You’re not alone with your anxiety. There are actually national shortages of certain anti-anxiety and sleep meds.
So let’s review the steps to reduce your risk of becoming ill. You know a lot of this already, but repetition is good for us in times of crisis.
Bite the bullet and accept the fact that the federal government (and many state governments) have been beyond useless since the pandemic began. Moreover, much of their advice has been dangerous. Perhaps the one person in the US whose advice we trust, Anthony Fauci, MD, has been silenced by the White House and has not met with the president since early June.
This means that you’re pretty much on your own.
But remember: your brain and survival instincts are intact. With precautions, we’ll get through this. The real danger is that you may be surrounded by low-information Americans or genuine idiots with no common sense. For example, here’s an indoor photo of a herd of people from mid-June, all of them unmasked.
In addition to keeping six feet away from others, washing your hands regularly, and sanitizing them frequently when out in the world, follow these steps.
Step one Here’s a chart showing the relative dangers of different activities. Print out a couple of copies and tape one to your refrigerator. Carry the other with you and refer to it frequently.
Step two Keep a good supply of masks and wear one any time you’re in a public place. This is not a political issue any more than driving with a seatbelt, using meds with safety caps, or telling your kid about stranger danger is political. Why in the midst of a pandemic it took the president until July 11 to wear a mask in public for the first time is beyond comprehension.
Step three Since state-by-state re-opening schedules are disorganized and chaotic, keep an eye on the states where infection rates have dropped and do what they do. Step four Check your supply of immune-boosting supplements. The most useful are:
—Vitamin C (1,000 to 2,000 mg/day).
—Vitamin D (5,000 IU/day).
