Q: I’m wondering if you could summarize all the ways I might go about increasing my energy level. I’ve had a lot of fatigue recently. Would you list supplements that could help, along with food and anything else? Thank you so much.

A: First, make sure you get enough sleep. Patients visit me with low energy problems every day and I’m astonished how many of them are slogging along with an inadequate amount of restorative sleep. Generally, seven to nine hours are needed, but you can find your own sleep number by doing this: next weekend, go to bed at 10 . When you awaken naturally (without an alarm) the next day, get out of bed and see if you feel you’ve slept enough. If you have, note how many hours you slept. (If you feel you need more sleep, go back to bed, calculating your total when you awaken again.) This is your sleep number. Anything less and you’ll feel tired the next day, so try to get it every night.

Limit yourself to no more than two cups of coffee or tea daily. Caffeine is an artificial energy booster and too much will interfere with sleep and deplete your adrenal glands, your source of energy throughout the day.

If you’ve not been to the doctor’s office in a while, get a check-up. Your doc may uncover mild anemia (from menstrual blood loss) or a mildly underactive thyroid. These are the two most common medical causes of fatigue in women.

Keep in mind that fatigue is the single most common reason women visit doctors, yet a medical cause for fatigue is found only rarely (about one fatigued woman out of 50 will actually be found to have a health problem). The other 49 are simply stressed to the max, depressed, have a hormonal imbalance (PMS or perimenopause), or are simply not taking good care of themselves (poor diet, inadequate sleep). If your doctor can’t find anything wrong, ask yourself “what is happening in my life that I should be tired like this?”

Check your adrenal gland function (DHEA and cortisol levels) with a simple take-home lab kit and check your basal body temperature for borderline underactive thyroid.

Schedule a weekly Meyer’s Cocktail for four weeks.
