TYLENOL AND AUTISM: THE FACTS

Health Tips / TYLENOL AND AUTISM: THE FACTS

You’ll not get the true facts about this from our President, whom, if you remember, also once suggested that injected disinfectant, like bleach, might kill the COVID virus. However, people being people, Poison Control Centers from around the country did get hundreds of calls from COVID patients who, listening to an authority figure, used a variety of substances to attempt to kill the virus. Gargling Lysol was a favorite.

The President, and his very misinformed Secretary of Health, badly garbled the actual facts about autism and have now created a landscape of frank distrust between patients and healthcare providers.

Kennedy is basically saying, “There is an epidemic of autism. We will find the cause and the cure.”

Trump is saying: “One of the causes is Tylenol. If you’re pregnant, don’t take Tylenol!”

In actual fact:

  • There appear to be more children with autism because doctors are better trained to diagnose it. This is very important to realize as Kennedy is implying autism is caused by environmental factors (vaccines, drugs, food additives). Decades of research has disproven this.
  • The following factors have been linked to autism: genetics; parental age; premature birth; prenatal exposure to drugs; environmental chemicals; infections. Most likely a combination of environment plus genetics is the key ‘villain’ for autism.
  • Tylenol got involved with autism in the 1990’s when there was a realization that older women, with more aches and pains, were taking more Tylenol and also had more children with autism. In Sweden, from 1995 to 2019, reviewing the health records of 2.4 million children, this association was not found. When older mothers (higher risk) took Tylenol (suspect drug), there might be one child with autism, but there was no increase in autism among that child’s siblings. Therefore Tylenol was “not guilty”.
  • Tylenol is the safest medication to reduce fever. An untreated fever can be very dangerous during pregnancy significantly increasing risks of miscarriage, birth defects (especially heart and facial defects) and premature birth. The danger is highest during the first trimester.
  • Tylenol is the safest medication to use for pain during pregnancy. Untreated pain during pregnancy can lead to complications including depression, anxiety and high blood pressure as well as negative effects on the fetus. Chronic untreated pain can lead to a decline in quality of life, inability to perform daily tasks, impair sleep and lead to postpartum depression. Other pain meds, like opioids and NSAIDs (Advil) are either contraindicated or advised for short term use only.

So, what’s the damage from President Trump’s outburst, “Fight like Hell not to take Tylenol.”

Well, you may have noticed he’s quite influential all over the world, with this rant he has engendered a significant public distrust of science and physicians. He (or Kennedy) has ordered the FDA to change the label on Tylenol to warn of a “possible association” between taking the drug and autism although this is definitely not the case. The FDA does admit that Tylenol is the only drug approved for fever and pain during pregnancy, two situations that can cause harm to a baby.

This is a dreadful position for parents.

Be well, I hope.

Of course, Dr. E., as we’ve seen over the past five years when somebody complains about political bias because it goes against what their favorite cable channel and podcaster say, they yell, “Do your own research.” In 99% of those cases their “research” is sitting on the toilet with their phone watching YouTube videos from someone with no medical training. By the way, I got that 99% “fact” from doing my own research.

    Hi Rick
The main difference between Dr Mercola and myself is that Joe Mercola makes $110 million a year from his products and I am a salaried employee of WholeHealth Chicag and make zero from my recommendations. Of course, that should not affect your judgement.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is a horrible affliction. Years ago, I trusted Dr. Edelberg as a source of unbiased, alternative healthcare info, but he apparently can no longer be trusted due to TDS/anti-RFK Jr and Mercola disease (I have yet to figure out how Dr. Mercola’s market is any different than Dr. Edelberg’s apothecary, and I don’t think citing an AMA study, likely funded directly or indirectly, by Pharma) is something Dr. Edelberg would have done years ago).

Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. I came here looking for a good doctor who might help me get healthier and what I found is pure evil. Such lies you are spewing, especially about President Trump. Thank God I saw this before ever contacting you for help. What an awful person you must be.

Why can you be so sure here? I can find more studies about these associations between Tylenol, Autism, and vaccines…than I can about ozone or EDTA being a medically useful treatment for any condition

Whether you’re right or wrong, the hypocrisy is what stands out to me

Thank you for the article. It’s about humanity!
Medicine is a science and an art. I’m open to what I may not know and to question what I do.
I appreciate your view on the science. I particularly found the article on lead informative.

The dropping of this article at this time is very telling. The subject is President Trump, not autism. It seemingly is meant to demean a leader who is today receiving world acclaim for accomplishing the impossible. Autism deserves very serious research because it has grown exponentially over the past decades and the reasons you give for its increasing diagnoses do not quite cut it. I would also like to see some heavy research on the medical condition, Trump Derangement Syndrome, which seems to be occupying much precious brain space, lessening quality of life, and causing untold anxiety in a significant percentage of the population. Is it due to genetics, the environment, or plain old indoctrination?

I am astonished that anyone is saying “Leave politics out of it” when, during these times, the crux of the U.S. Government shutdown is the argument over funding of healthcare. About 15 million people can lose their health insurance without this funding.
As for the “facts” about Tylenol, here is the research paper from the Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol 331 No. 14. Conclusion:
Acetaminophen use during pregnancy was not associated with children’s risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in sibling control analyses.

So sad to see that the Hate has infiltrated ChicagoWholeHealth. This level of discourse has been fostered by trump and certainly his Cabinet. It’s also not debatable that trump did a terrible job handling Covid. And that people died because of it. That is simply not debatable.

The implication that Dr. Edelberg is mistreating patients with unorthodox treatment for Lyme Disease?? Guess what? Every health care provider who has the guts to even acknowledge Lyme and other tick borne illness is providing unorthodox treatment. There is no other way to treat them because they have been completely excluded from our health care system.

But claiming that Dr Edelberg is similar to the Secretary is reprehensible.

Talk about not reading the room.

    Pedal your hate somewhere else.

The MAGA’s are upset with the facts as usual. The uneducated are exposing themselves. Dr Edelberg is the only doctor I trust. He’s the only physician in my almost 63 years of life that has listened to me. I’m in the best health of my life and I’m chronically ill and disabled. The current administration has brought healthcare to an embarrassing and dangerous level it needs to be discussed. Ignorance isn’t bliss in this case.

Your first two bullet points of “facts”. Completely contradict themselves. You have pretty much the same view as RFK on this.

You’re also the “crazy” one suggesting infections and Lyme disease

Infections and environmental chemical, but simultaneously not these at the same time..

It’s sad to see your politic bias cloud your ability to think critically.

Can’t believe someone that profits off ozone and injectable glutathione wrote this article. By your own standards you are as much of a quack and Trump and Kennedy.

You also know he was talking about chlorine dioxide and are deliberately lying in this. While this might not be the best treatment for Covid either, you’ve recommended just as crazy/unproven treatments to your patients by your own standards.

Do you work for Tylenol? Or are your politics just completely blinding you? Every autism mom that I know agrees with the advice to avoid Tylenol. People should do their own research on the effects that Tylenol has on the body, especially when given with vaccines. Even more so, the dangers of people with MTHFR in using it. The greater question is why isn’t every single pregnant woman and newborn baby tested for that gene mutation? Then, medical decisions can be made appropriately from the start. For an organization that serves its patients with functional, holistic medicine, you sir seem to lack the ability to read the room.

I wish you didn’t write this with such obvious bias. You lost me with the “injected bleach” comment. That has been so debunked and I wish you would leave your political bias out of it. I don’t want to know what my health care provider believes politically. As a doctor, you should be able to handle someone asking questions. The amount of lies told during covid and the vaccine injury cover-ups that occurred during that time and you focus on the “bleach” lie, shows me how skewed your point of view is. You lost your credibility with me. I am happy someone is asking questions and making people look for some answers about Autism. People are smart and can certainly do their own research. Keep your politics out of it.
