There are few words in health care that make my toes curl more than “gum scaling.” They’re like a fingernail drawn slowly across the blackboard of life. When patients come in for a check-up with me, they get their gums checked, a quick effort to save them from the moment when their dentist says, “Now we’ll get to work on those gums of yours.”

Gum health is one of life’s tedious necessities. Even the densest planetary citizen knows that unhealthy gums cause bad breath, tooth decay, and, ultimately, tooth loss.

But let’s say you’ve got some gum issues right now, and your dentist has been hinting at a little work in the future. Here’s a ritual I learned from Dr. Alan Gaby, who most holistic physicians acknowledge as the best in the business when it comes to nutritional medicine.

Right up front, this is a little complicated, but given the alternative, it’s worth the effort.

You will need:

•  High absorption Coenzyme Q-10 (UBQH)

•  Folic acid in liquid form

•  Vitamin E 400 IU in capsule form

•  Buffered vitamin C powder

The Co Q 10 is the easiest: just take one capsule daily.

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: after brushing your teeth, brush your gums GENTLY, with the softest tooth brush you can find. Then, open a vitamin E capsule with a pin, squeeze out the oil, and massage it into your gum line with your finger.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays: after brushing your teeth, brush your gums GENTLY, using the powdered vitamin C as a tooth powder. Rinse.

Every night at bedtime: after brushing your teeth, use a cotton swab to paint your gum line with liquid folic acid.

You’ll notice results in about 3 to 4 weeks. Think of the thrill of unalloyed pleasure you’ll experience from hearing, “Looks like we don’t have to work on those gums of yours. Good job!”

Please floss every night too.

    Thank you,

In the past I had base of tongue cancer and radiation. My teeth are now brittle and my gums are swollen and both are deteriorating rapidly. Because of a really large cavity under a crown(and 10 other smaller cavities)I had to have a root canal (in order to avoid osteoradionarcosis) which has had all kinds of negative effects (swelling on left side of face) including a lump behind my bottom front teeth and swollen gums and having to repeatedly take antibiotics. If you are aware of my condition and can be of future help, please let me know.

    Thank you for the information!

Really a pretty good schedule! Vitamin E affecting the gum health is ever accepted. Nice info!
