If you travel at all, you don’t need me to describe the dismal food options at most airports. Yes, there are occasionally some decent choices, but what to do in the face of cinnamon buns, cold white-bread lunchmeat sandwiches, and mini-pizzas?
Pack your own.
Adding yet another item to your pre-departure list may not seem worth the trouble, but consider the delays most travelers face these days. You might be glad you tucked a few nutritional snacks into your carry-on.
Here are a few of my favorites:
• Natural peanut butter sandwich on whole-grain bread with raisins Cut into quarters and pop into a bag. Pull out a square when you’re feeling peckish and enjoy the sweet-salty combo. Goes well with skim milk if it’s offered. Plus, peanuts contain antioxidant levels that rival many fruits.
• Veggie surprise Bag some cut-up carrots, bell peppers, and/or celery. When the captain announces you’ll be sitting on the tarmac for 45 minutes, start chomping. Celery can help lower blood pressure just when you need it.
• Fruit Scrub a banana and a small apple. Fruit won’t spike your blood sugar like cookies and chips, which leave you hungry soon after eating. Throw in a few prunes for good measure. Click here to read about their constellation of health benefits.
