Periodically, a new development in natural/holistic health really lives up to its hype. This is the case with energy psychology.
I’ve used it to help hundreds of patients overcome conditions such as post-traumatic reactions, major losses, fear of public speaking and flying, unresolved anger, and many other common emotional blocks. Using energy psychology, I’ve assisted many other patients in overcoming blocks to peak performance in the arts, sports, and business.
Energy psychology treatment shows patients how to access their own “in-house healing system.” This is accomplished by tapping on or holding acupuncture points or by working with the chakras or biofield. Treatment is straightforward and usually leads to immediate and positive change.
When I work with someone who is having trouble overcoming a traumatic experience, I’ll ask that person to think about one aspect of the traumatic situation. Then together we note the physical reactions (heaviness in the chest area, for example), emotional responses (such as feeling sad and overwhelmed), and thoughts (“I’m helpless”).
The patient typically rates the overall level of distress on a 0 to 10 scale, with 10 being the highest possible distress. Next, patients learn how to tap on a series of acupuncture points, a process that takes only a minute or so. Usually, immediately after doing this tapping, the patient reports a significant decrease in his or her physical, emotional, and cognitive discomfort and the distress number goes down.
Often, patients are amazed at how calm they feel, and are pleased that they naturally shift into a more positive and hopeful frame of mind. A wonderful aspect of energy psychology is that it can be easily used for self-treatment.
I’ve been passionate about energy psychology since 1996. As the current president of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (the world’s largest organization for energy psychology practitioners, www.energypsych.org), I’ve worked to promote research and high standards in this new field. I’ve also met practitioners from around the world, all of whom share the same positive experiences.
Energy Psychology practitioners have been able to help trauma victims get back on their feet after natural disasters and in war zones. There are wonderful energy psychology success stories from devastated sites such as Bosnia, the Indonesian tsunami, hurricane Katrina, the earthquakes in Guatemala, Turkey, and Pakistan, and among our returning war veterans.
It’s the consistency of these reports–from very seasoned and accomplished therapists–that helped me understand that energy psychology is an important tool for helping all of us access our natural healing abilities.
I believe energy psychology techniques should be widely taught in schools, businesses, medical clinics, and to emergency first responders to help people in each of these areas manage stress, improve performance, and promote clear thinking.
We’re delighted to offer energy psychology right here at WholeHealth Chicago, a leader in the responsible practice of integrative medicine.
