Seriously Spooky Sugar

When you walk into a Walgreens (“at the corner of happy and healthy”) and make your way past the cigarette section, you’ll soon hit the candy aisle. Halloween’s coming up and there are, without exaggeration, at least a thousand big bags of candy for you to pass out to unsuspecting children. This year, don’t do it. Give them an apple. Ignore their frowns, their “yech!” Read More

Fish Oil: Finally Some Solid Answers

In the 1970s, epidemiologic studies discovered that Inuit (the indigenous people of the Arctic regions Canada, Alaska, and Greenland), whose diet was extremely rich in fish, had a much lower rate of heart disease than Americans and Europeans. Scientists attributed this to the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in fish, which seemed to protect and stabilize the delicate membranes that surround every cell in the Read More

Death By Cupcake

Happy Valentine’s Day! People who know me will say today’s health tip on the dangers of sugar is just typical, badgering innocent people on a holiday dedicated to love, romance, and dessert. Before we get started, let me pull out my two favorite passive-aggressive chestnuts: “I’m just looking out for your best interests” and “I only want to help.” If instead of cupcakes or a Read More

Acne and Diet

When I was a teenager, where acne was concerned I was convinced there was a conspiracy between doctors and parents. It seemed like everything we kids enjoyed eating would cause my face to explode. Getting Off the Seasonal Sugar Rollercoaster

Click here for the Health Tip link. As we head into the darker winter months, it’s natural to experience the winter blues. Dr. Edelberg reminds us that as the light changes on these shorter days, our bodies adjust by producing less feel-good serotonin. And while it’s best to raise serotonin levels with exercise, sunlight (or a full spectrum light), and complex carbohydrates such as veggies Read More

Okay, I am going to start in on sugar. And by sugar, I mean not only granulated cane sugar but also high fructose corn syrup, which seems to be added to just about everything except anchovies these days.

  • Male Menopause–Is It Real?

Short answer: Yes, but don’t hope for any quick fixes—that’s so-o-o pharmaceutical industry think. Another way to view male menopause: Sure, a ball will bounce, only less and less. I get asked about male menopause all the time, almost always by women (admittedly they represent the majority of my patients), but only rarely by my male patients who, for the most part, don’t seem to Read More

  • How To Not Gain Weight

Please note this Health Tip will not tell you how to lose weight. If you want to browse the offerings on that topic, go to amazon and search for diet books. Once our largest bookstore attempted to track the numbers, but when they surpassed 95,000 it apparently gave up and now tell us that the number is “over 60,000.” If we publish this many diet Read More

Prepare yourself for a genuinely frightening Health Tip. I bought Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons, by investigative reporter Kris Newby, this past Saturday at 10 am and finished it at 8 pm. It reads more like a thriller than non-fiction and is chilling in its implications. First, some background: The tickborne infectious illness Lyme disease was first reported in 1975 Read More
