Seriously Spooky Sugar

When you walk into a Walgreens (“at the corner of happy and healthy”) and make your way past the cigarette section, you’ll soon hit the candy aisle. Halloween’s coming up and there are, without exaggeration, at least a thousand big bags of candy for you to pass out to unsuspecting children. This year, don’t do it. Give them an apple. Ignore their frowns, their “yech!” Read More

Project Microbiome: Bacterial Happiness and Health

A short article tucked in the New York Times health blog “Well” reported on a Cornell University study published in Microbiome, an obscure medical journal whose circulation is likely in the upper two digits. To my mind, it’s an important piece of research and I’d guess that years from now as we understand more and more about why we’re susceptible to so many chronic illnesses, Read More

The Mystery Of Sudden Weight Gain

You know who you are. You’ve been eating stable portions of pretty much the same healthy food for years and you consider yourself weight conscious. Long ago you decided that by combining smart food choices and a health club membership, you were not–definitely not–going to be one of those people who added a point or two to their BMI score every year. Speaking of your Read More

The WholeHealth Chicago Wellness Exam

The WholeHealth Chicago Wellness Exam Patients new to WholeHealth Chicago, along with patients I’ve not seen for a while because they’ve felt good and sensibly wanted to avoid the health care system, often ask for a wellness check-up when they schedule an appointment. You’ve probably had variations of these exams throughout your life: kicking and screaming in your pediatrician’s office as you tearfully told mom Read More

Just stop being a little piggy,” you should know about a study published last week in the British Medical Journal tracking the weight-gain patterns of an astonishing 124,086 men and women in the US over 24 years. In fact, if you’re among the millions who avoid glancing at their bathroom scale Read More

“I Am So Bloated!”

Susan had written “BLOATED!” in the section marked “What’s the main problem?” She told me she’d been suffering for years, her stomach feeling like some gremlin was inflating a balloon every time she ate. When the bloating was especially severe, Susan said she looked like she was in her fifth month of pregnancy. She was even embarrassed to accept dinner invitations. “You can actually see Read More

Can Your Diet Actually Prevent Breast Cancer?

An important study published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine confirmed what doctors had suspected for some time but had been unable to prove. You can definitely reduce your risk of developing invasive breast cancer by pledging to follow that Mediterranean Diet you’ve read about but never got around to taking seriously. Researchers in Spain assigned 4,200 women to one of three eating programs: Group Read More

Nutritional Counseling

Ever since I was a baby I have had stomach problems, diagnosed as lactose and soy intolerant; finding formula was not easy or cheap for my parents.  As I got older stomach pain was always an issue for me, I even got to the point where I no longer wanted to eat because it seemed everything I ate made my stomach upset, not just dairy.  Read More

Symptoms: Disease or Functional?

In medical school, you’re taught that patients either have a disease or don’t: That your patient is either genuinely unwell with a name-able condition (and the positive test results affirming this diagnosis) or not.
