It’s That SAD Time Again

Right now, mid-December, if you happen to be sitting in a room with five of your friends, the odds are strong that one of you has seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. If you’re the one, you’re probably in your 20s or early 30s (the vulnerable years for SAD, though you can have it at any age), you know something’s wrong, and you know you’ve been dreading winter more with Read More

The Evidence Is In: Inflammation Shortens Your Life

Did you ever ponder why some obese people, after decades of being badgered by their families and physicians to lose weight, out-live their thin friends and seem perfectly healthy? Or how someone in his 50s falls over dead from a massive heart attack after being told during his check-up that everything was fine, his cholesterol perfect? Despite the apparent injustice, this is not the devil’s Read More

The Insanity of Healthcare Pricing

It’s hard to believe now, but about 50 years ago when you went shopping for a new car you simply had no idea how badly you were being stiffed by the dealer. Oh, sure, he might show you the invoice price from Detroit, but he’d also routinely add hundreds of dollars for shipping, dealer prep (whatever that was), accessories, undercoating, and rustproofing. I clearly recall Read More

Dr. Casey Kelley and Integrative Medicine

There’s a most exciting development at WholeHealth Chicago this week, but first let’s take a brief look at the 20-year arc of what we know as alternative medicine. Since the early 1990s, when data started appearing about the unexpectedly wide use of alternative therapies by the US public, there’s been a nonstop conversation about what exactly constitutes “alternative medicine” and who practices which type. Important News About Hormone Therapy

It was almost 20 years ago that I first learned about bioidentical hormone therapy from a talk given by Christiane Northrup, MD, (author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause) at the first meeting I ever attended of the American Holistic Medical Association. By the way, the line-up of speakers included not only Chris, who was one of the original founders, but Read More

Franz Kafka and Health Insurance

I visited the ancient city of Prague in the Czech Republic a couple of weeks ago, where the novelist Franz Kafka, now considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, has grown into a local cultural hero.

Worst-Fear Insurance

Nursing homes, or what we now euphemistically call “long-term care facilities,” are a relatively recent phenomenon. Until about 30 years ago, great grandmothers usually existed as a shadowy presence in a family, often confused and crotchety until they became ill, took to bed, and died. Nobody thought of putting them “in a home.”

Insurance Insurance

This is my own term for a new insurance policy that some entrepreneur should create for the US public. Stung by an insurance company and unable to collect your rightful benefits? Denied reimbursement for anything from a dental implant to a dented fender? Don’t fret: you have insurance insurance! Let the Big Boys duke it out among themselves.

Iron

Iron, a trace Mineral, supplies energy to every cell in the body. It is a key component of Hemoglobin, the blood’s oxygen-carrying pigment. Iron is also found in myoglobin, which supplies oxygen to muscles, and in compounds that keep the immune system strong. This mineral is critical to sharp mental functioning. Even slight deficiencies in iron can shorten attention span and make concentration difficult.

More on Infertility

Many couples struggle with issues of infertility, and last week I voiced my concern about the one-size-fits-all approach that most conventional infertility centers take, along with their reluctance to offer simple, inexpensive, and safe nutritional and alternative therapies first.

  • Physicians And Empathy

Some time ago I read an essay by a woman who described her experiences being employed as a medical actor. She’d been hired, along with some retirees, local theater majors, and a few people who were just curious, to play the role of patient in a training program for a local medical school. To start, she was assigned an identity that actually contained a lot of Read More

  • Controversial Diagnosis #6: Chronic Lyme Disease

Since no one argues about the existence of Lyme disease, right up front you should know that the controversy here centers on the word “chronic.” In my view, the arguments among physicians about whether or not such an entity exists are becoming a bit ridiculous. First, let’s briefly cover acute Lyme disease. Although certain states have more cases than others, acute Lyme disease has been Read More

  • Controversial Diagnosis #5: Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity

You’d be surprised at the degree of controversy surrounding this seemingly innocuous topic, not only among doctors but also patients (and best not to bring it up with anyone in the baking industry). This diagnosis has generated entire aisles of gluten-free products in grocery stores and GF selections on restaurant menus. And just perhaps you’re getting fewer dinner invitations because your host doesn’t want to Read More
