The usual ones that every doctor should be reading (JAMA, Medscape, etc.), but I don\u2019t miss the New York Times and the Washington Post. I often find something I might have missed elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/04\/well\/eat\/ultraprocessed-food-mental-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">This article<\/a> from the Times startled me, but it did not surprise me. In this study, researchers in the U.S. tracked the diet diaries of 10,000 patients and found that when 60% or more of the caloric intake came from ultra-processed foods (UPFs), those individuals were more than likely to also have chronic problems with anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article went on to mention how two years earlier, researchers in Brazi<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/article-abstract\/2799140\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">l followed 11,000 diet diaries <\/a>and reported that high amounts of UPFs eaten over years were associated with \u201cglobal cognitive decline\u201d, which included delayed word recall, poor executive function, and poor word recognition. While they acknowledged \u201cnormal\u201d age-related changes in brain function, a lifetime chowing down UPFs presses the \u2018fast-forward\u2019 button on brain decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s pause here and define our terms. What constitutes an ultra-processed food? From the Brazilian researcher herself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUltra-processed foods include ingredients that are rarely used in homemade recipes \u2014 such as high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, protein isolates and chemical additives, like colors, artificial<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>flavors, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and preservatives,\u201d said Eur\u00eddice Mart\u00ednez Steele, a researcher in food processing at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, to spot UPFs you must: (1) read every label and if you can\u2019t easily pronounce a word, then you\u2019ve likely spotted a UPF, (2) as you\u2019re reading, if you see an ingredient that you don\u2019t use in your kitchen, it\u2019s a UPF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless this is your kitchen: \u201cHoney, your meatloaf is a little short on the hydrogenates and Red Dye #3.\u201d; \u201cMom, the gravy is too thin. Pass the carboxymethylcellulose, please.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheerless fact #1: 60% of the foods eaten in the U.S. are ultra-processed, even the ones we think might be healthy. In almond milk, for instance, sunflower lecithin and gellan gum are used as thickeners. These are considered \u201csafe\u201d by the FDA, but still, I\u2019ll bet neither is in your pantry. On the rare occasion that I thicken a gravy, I reach for corn starch, labeled \u201c100% Corn Starch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheerless fact #2: It\u2019s been known for years that a diet high in UPFs increases your risk for developing all chronic illnesses (obesity, heart\/kidney disease, cancer, autoimmune disorders) and now mental illnesses (anxiety\/depression\/cognitive decline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheerless fact #3: There is virtually no government control over additives which are classified as \u201cGRAS\u201d (Generally Recognized As Safe) even though many of them are actually banned in many countries around the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailymeal.com\/travel\/american-foods-banned-other-%20countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Here\u2019s a list<\/a> of banned food additives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheerless fact #4: In the same way the tobacco industry manipulated nicotine to make it more addictive, the food industry manipulates UPFs to keep making you want \u201cmore\u201d (taste, mouth-feel, another cookie even after you\u2019re full).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheerless fact #5 (last one, I promise): For those seeking the \u201croot cause\u201d of things, wondering just why UPFs are dangerous, the answer appears to be twofold. First, they increase levels of inflammation throughout your body (not a good thing) and second, they alter your gut microbiome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a positive spin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/05\/04\/well\/eat\/ultraprocessed-foods.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">here is a quiz<\/a> about how to spot unprocessed foods.
