Probably best not to spend much time agonizing about this, unless you\u2019re pretty sure there was an unusually excessive amount of premature deaths (50\u2019s, 60\u2019s) from heart disease. &nbsp;Better to work mainly on yourself. Hearing from your parents \u201cYour Uncle Max had something wrong with his heart\u201d, but also knowing he smoked two packs of Luckies a day is not helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However if there is an inordinate amount of early <a href=\"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/05\/heart-disease-prevention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heart disease<\/a> in your family or you\u2019ve learned of&nbsp;risks like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes at relatively young ages (20\u2019s to 40\u2019s), then definitely take preventive measures seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Genetic Testing Necessary?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably not. I\u2019ve seen several online companies offering these tests, and I am unimpressed. Cardiologists don\u2019t put a lot of value in these and because of this, insurance companies almost never pay for them. Those patients who do spend the hundreds of dollars to learn their \u201cheart risks\u201d are told to \u201ceat healthfully\u201d, \u201cexercise regularly\u201d, \u201ckeep your weight under control\u201d. At this point, genetic testing is simply not reliable enough to be part of routine heart screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get a Home Blood Pressure Monitor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, come on! Do I really need this? Well, yes, if you\u2019re serious about heart disease prevention. You probably get your blood pressure measured once or twice a year at best; you don\u2019t know how skilled the person is who is taking your blood pressure (I once knew a nurse\u2019s aide at a nursing home who had been told to write 110\/70 every time she took a blood pressure and had done so for twenty years). And of course many of you have \u201cwhite coat\u201d high blood pressure so just get your own unit. Remember the phrase, \u201cIf you want something done right, do it yourself\u201d. Blood pressure devices are all about the same price, but <a href=\"https:\/\/oxiline.shop\/pressure\/?click=djjp74t01mcj6e9kiqb8gmcm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">this one<\/a> outperformed the dozens tested. No! I just didn\u2019t have a scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And GrubHub is definitely not going to including a scale with your order anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Familiarize yourself with heart healthy eating by buying a few cookbooks on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Heart-Healthy-Cookbook-Two-Perfectly\/dp\/1939754119\/ref=pd_bxgy_sccl_2\/140-9778123-8358857?pd_rd_w=98Aa6&amp;content-id=amzn1.sym.7757a8b5-874e-4a67-9d85-54ed32f01737&amp;pf_rd_p=7757a8b5-874e-4a67-9d85-54ed32f01737&amp;pf_rd_r=ZTEDGN3HT4MW8947P7KA&amp;pd_rd_wg=r75TS&amp;pd_rd_r=c7cbab4e-ec53-4951-b0c3-6362742eaff0&amp;pd_rd_i=1939754119&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">subject<\/a>, and just glancing through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know this may sound silly but as you flip through cookbook pages (and notice I am not asking you to cook the meals&#8212;not just yet), you\u2019ll really understand what makes a meal a \u201clife extender\u201d versus a \u201clife shortener\u201d.
