{"id":30352,"date":"2022-08-01T19:27:27","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T00:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/?p=30352"},"modified":"2022-11-14T13:48:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-14T19:48:01","slug":"longevity-medicine-three-new-facts-and-five-anti-aging-supplements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/2022\/08\/01\/longevity-medicine-three-new-facts-and-five-anti-aging-supplements","title":{"rendered":"Longevity Medicine: Three New Facts And Five Anti-Aging Supplements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scientists completely agree coffee drinking helps longevity.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During these days of generally bad news (people getting shot, the Monarch butterfly population in steep decline) it is heartening to read the findings from a huge study<strong> <\/strong>(over 170,000 men and women with average age 55 tracked over seven years) whose \u201call cause death rate\u201d was dramatically lower among the coffee drinkers than among those who did not drink coffee. The \u201cbest amount\u201d to drink was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M21-2977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> 1.5 to 3.5 cups a day<\/a>, and interestingly, with or without sugar or artificial sweeteners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you might not think of coffee as a health beverage, during the past few years, other studies have shown coffee has been helpful for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reducing your risk of developing Alzheimer\u2019s Disease, Parkinson\u2019s Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, congestive heart failure, and even colon cancer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improving the detoxification pathways of your liver and strengthening your DNA (these may account for the cancer protective aspects of coffee).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Helping fight depression.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increasing your metabolic and therefore useful in weight management.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On the other hand, that saltshaker on your dining room table will subtract a couple of years OFF your life.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the conclusion of another \u201cmega-study\u201d (over 500,000 Europeans) surveying those who sprinkled more salt on food after it was served versus those who left their meals well enough alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s mainly patients with heart disease, high blood pressure and\/or visible fluid retention (swollen feet and ankles) who are advised to \u201ccut back on the salt\u201d. Unfortunately, I can tell you that few people follow this advice. The problem with salt (sodium chloride) is that it causes fluid retention, swells up your arteries, stresses your heart, and raises your blood pressure. Food prepared at home or in restaurants is often already oversalted although on the plus side, these days I\u2019m not seeing saltshakers at restaurants, maybe a COVID phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2022\/07\/220710185959.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">But adding more salt<\/a>, i.e. your saltshaker, places you at a risk for premature death which the authors define as dying before age 75.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lastly, have you ever wondered which is more important, a healthful diet or regular exercise? The answer: BOTH, BABY, BOTH!!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Still another \u2018mega-study\u2019 (346,000), from the British Journal of Sports Medicine, actually made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/13\/well\/move\/exercise-diet-disease.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">front page of the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During our new patient intake interviews at WholeHealth Chicago, we ask about exercise and dietary habits. Most people sincerely do one or the other; relatively few do both, even though, as the saying goes \u201cThe Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions\u201d. Let\u2019s face it, you do need discipline to eat a healthy diet <strong>and <\/strong>exercise regularly. But this is what\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data driven statistician-physicians from the University of Sydney went through 346,000 surveys and came up with the fact: if you want to reduce your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, cancer, etc., in other words enjoy a longer and healthier life, you\u2019ve got to do both, eat well and exercise regularly. <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2022\/07\/08\/bjsports-2021-105195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Here\u2019s the article, read it yourself<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Same content, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/13\/well\/move\/exercise-diet-disease.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">summarized from the New York Times<\/a>, in case you didn\u2019t believe me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, patients ask about the \u201cbest\u201d anti-aging meds and supplements. The only interesting prescription medication available to the general public is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/is-metformin-a-wonder-drug-202109222605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">metformin, written about in the Harvard Health Letter<\/a><\/strong>. The FDA has approved metformin for Type 2 diabetes. Off label it\u2019s prescribed for pre-diabetes, reducing cancer risk, dementia, and anti-aging.
