{"id":29962,"date":"2021-11-28T18:39:38","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T00:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/?p=29962"},"modified":"2022-11-14T13:48:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-14T19:48:30","slug":"root-causes-of-chronic-fatigue-part-6-low-magnesium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/2021\/11\/28\/root-causes-of-chronic-fatigue-part-6-low-magnesium","title":{"rendered":"Root Causes of Chronic Fatigue, Part 6: Low Magnesium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>George Lundberg, MD, former editor of JAMA and now editor-at-large of Medscape, refers to low levels of magnesium as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/844214?ecd=ppc_google_rlsa-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the emperor of all maladies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnesium is largely ignored by doctors, despite the fact that having an insufficient amount of this mineral has been linked to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Heart arrhythmias and heart attacks<\/li><li>High blood pressure<\/li><li>Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/li><li>Anxiety<\/li><li>Seizures<\/li><li>Leg cramps<\/li><li>Restless leg syndrome<\/li><li>Kidney stones<\/li><li>Tension headaches and migraines<\/li><li>Premenstrual syndrome<\/li><li>Fibromyalgia<\/li><li>Chest pain<\/li><li>Osteoporosis<\/li><li>Altitude sickness<\/li><li>Diabetes<\/li><li>Chronic fatigue syndrome<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026and a host of other conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Gaby, MD, author of the 1,500-page textbook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nutritional-Medicine-Second-Alan-Gaby\/dp\/1532322097\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=alan+gaby+nutritional+medicine&amp;qid=1638119411&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Nutritional Medicine<\/em><\/a>, likes to remind doctors that magnesium is involved in more than 300 of the body\u2019s enzyme functions, most importantly ATP production, which in turn is the principle molecule for storing and transferring energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Gaby\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Magnesium-Alan-Gaby\/dp\/0879836024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Magnesium<\/em><\/a>, a 46-page paperback written in 1998, $2.95 &nbsp;when first published, is now a collector\u2019s item costing nearly $300. (Dr. Gaby thinks this is funny and suggests you purchase his textbook for $200 instead.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><strong>Focus on the US<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of the chronic illnesses listed above is disproportionately higher in the US than in other western countries, according to the World Health Organization, which also notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The main symptoms linked to low magnesium are fatigue, muscle cramps, palpitations, numbness\/tingling, nausea, depression, asthma, high blood pressure, and migraine.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>75% of all Americans consume less magnesium than they need for good health and well-being.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Specifically, we don\u2019t eat enough magnesium-rich foods. These include dark green leafy vegetables, tree nuts, seeds, oily fish, beans, lentils, legumes, whole grains, and molasses.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Many of us take drugs that deplete magnesium. The main culprits are diuretics (water pills) and proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, and Prevacid. Drinking alcohol also depletes magnesium.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, on a worldwide basis, climate change and poor farming practices have seriously depleted the soil of magnesium. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/labs\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7649274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">This important article<\/a> discusses how plants themselves are suffering magnesium deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnesium is one of the electrolytes, which include sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium. These last four are easy to measure with a routine blood draw because they\u2019re in your blood serum. Magnesium is different. Most magnesium is intracellular (inside your cells) and although there are several techniques used to measure the body\u2019s magnesium, they\u2019re quite involved and often inaccurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the challenges we face trying to get enough magnesium and the health risks caused by deficiency, whether you have symptoms or not a daily supplement is a good idea. The recommended minimum is 400 mg a day. Most of this can be found in a nutritious diet, supplemented by a good product such as <a href=\"https:\/\/whcstore.vitogenix.com\/product\/metagenics-mag-glycinate-240-count\/553?cp=true&amp;sa=false&amp;sbp=false&amp;q=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this by Metagenics<\/a>, taken twice daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One easy way to boost magnesium quickly and efficiently is to call and schedule a <a href=\"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/17\/iv-therapies-part-1-the-world-famous-myers-cocktail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Myers\u2019 cocktail IV<\/a>.
