{"id":2680,"date":"2007-12-26T06:38:14","date_gmt":"2007-12-26T12:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/?p=2680"},"modified":"2022-03-21T14:59:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T19:59:37","slug":"vitamin-d-and-your-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/blog\/2007\/12\/26\/vitamin-d-and-your-heart","title":{"rendered":"Vitamin D and Your Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.dredelberg.com\/newsletters\/071226WHC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here <\/a>for the original post.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written quite a bit on the beneficial effects of vitamin D, from building bones and helping with fibromyalgia to preventing cancer&#8211;click <a href=\"http:\/\/wholehealthchicago.com\/category\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here <\/a>and search the Health Tip archives for previous articles.<\/p>\n<p>Now there\u2019s another reason to ensure you get your D. <em>The Archives of Internal Medicine<\/em> published a <a href=\"https:\/\/archinte.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/short\/167\/11\/1159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> this year analyzing more than 15,000 people&#8211;half men, half women&#8211;and found that participants who had low blood levels of vitamin D were more likely to have high blood pressure and high levels of bad cholesterol, both real risks to your heart.<\/p>\n<p>They also discovered that those with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to be obese and to have diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that most vitamin D is made by your body itself, produced when sunlight reaches your skin. If you\u2019re reading this anywhere in the northern hemisphere, you\u2019re definitely not getting any vitamin D from sun exposure this month, or last month, or the next three months. This means you risk vitamin D deficiency unless you take a supplement.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there\u2019s some D in foods like egg yolks, fortified milk, and salmon, but it\u2019s virtually impossible to get the amounts you need to prevent deficiency from healthy portions of these foods.<\/p>\n<p>My prescription: 2000-3000 IU of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.triplewhammycure.com\/supplements\/iso-d3\/prod_46.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a> per day&#8211;every day. Please don\u2019t worry about overdosing on D.
