Opening Flow and Restore

Research has established that yoga is beneficial for people with depression and anxiety, but did you know that recent studies show practicing yoga elevates the neurotransmitter GABA? In low amounts, this important brain chemical is linked to depression and anxiety disorders. Higher GABA levels in those who do yoga can be attributed to both the physical movement and stimulation of the energetic chakra system.

Each posture in yoga works to open one or more chakras, the energy centers aligned from the base of your tailbone to the crown of your head. When energy is blocked in one of the chakras, your mood can downshift toward low self-esteem, worry, anxiousness, anger, and depression.

Whole Health Chicago’s Yoga For Emotional Support is a class designed to increase levels of GABA while opening areas of the body that can easily tighten around chakras. To achieve this, we’ll first practice a series of grounding postures and then continue into a steady flow of invigorating standing postures. The last portion of class is dedicated to seated yin postures that release deep-rooted tension in the hips, shoulders, and chest, target areas for blocked energy.

Weekly classes are held on Mondays at 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at WholeHealth Chicago.  Classes are $20 each; only $10 for your first class, and $15 when you refer a friend who joins you. Individual private sessions are also available. To register for a class or for more information, contact the center at 773-296-6700.

Those are actually the words patients use to describe their breath, though sometimes it’s “poop breath.” The medical term for bad breath, as you probably know, is halitosis, so if you don’t mind I’ll stick with that.
