Fast Food Favorites: Salmon in a Pouch

Here’s a fast-food favorite that’s new to us: skinless, boneless Alaskan salmon in a pouch. No liquid to drain and no cans to open, making it an utterly convenient lunch or snack food. It makes an easy dinner too.

Several brands offer this presentation. One we see here in Chicago is Pillar Rock, which carries a single-serving 3-ounce packet as well as a 7.1-ounce pouch for larger meals.

Salmon, as virtually everyone knows by now, is loaded with beneficial omega-3s. Most salmon in pouches contains limited additional ingredients, usually a bit of vegetable broth and salt, so no need to use the shaker.

How can you enjoy this fast-food favorite?
Just tear open the packet (no refrigeration required) and:
Make a salad Use the salmon like you would tuna, adding chopped celery, onion, hard-boiled egg, and a bit of mayo to hold it together. Better yet, make a green salad with lots of veggies and add the salmon before tossing with an olive oil and vinegar dressing. Or, prepare the salmon with this olive tapenade featured in one of our recent recipes.

Add to pasta The flaked salmon is ready to add to any hot or cold pasta dish.

Take it to go Desk-bound lunchers/snackers can shake the salmon into a bowl and enjoy with a fork for a seriously nutritious 120 calories of pure protein. To add a little mood-lifting carbohydrate, keep some whole-grain crackers in your desk drawer and use them to scoop up the salmon.
