Project Buena Vista

A couple months ago, one of our acupuncturists, Cindy Kudelka, took a two-week journey to volunteer her time in the Peruvian Amazon, treating the indigenous communities with free acupuncture and Chinese medicine. This medical outreach trip is planned bi-annually by the non-profit organization Project Buena Vista. The project’s mission is to help promote the preservation of the Peruvian Amazon and indigenous knowledge with medical outreach, awareness, and cross-culturalism.

During the trip, a group of five acupuncturists treated more than 200 patients whose various ailments included parasitic/fungal infections, digestive/hormonal issues, and pain.

For the clinical time of their stay, the group camped at the Buena Vista property, located in the Manu biosphere of the Amazonian jungle. Cindy says, “It was a humbling reminder that nature is dominant in this part of the world.” A couple of the volunteers even had close encounters with a viper and tarantula. Fortunately, everyone left in one piece.

During the daily 90-minute walks and boat rides through the jungle to the clinic, they connected with nature and their surroundings. Cindy’s time in the jungle helped her put into perspective how much we take for granted simple accommodations such as electricity and hot water.

Overall, she reflects, “It was beautiful to be of assistance to the people of the land, who live simply and do not receive much medical support.”
